Skill development in india has attained significance as the youth constitue around 60 percent of the population of the country. Providing adequate skills to these many youths are crucial for reaping the demographic dividend and thus sustaining a high growth rate of economy.
Under UPA government prime minister has setup cabinet committee on skill development.Government has set up national skill develpment council.The National skill development corporation addresses the financial requirement for providing adequate skills to the people and making them employable. The business and corporate houses must work in tandem to achieve government goal of skilling 500 million people in ten years. This requires setting agenda and time bound goals for reaching a target of 50 million per annum.
In most of the western developed countries ,people employed in vocational jobs are as high as 90 percent.whereas India its less than 20 percent. Government needs to setup more vocational training institutes like ITI’s .Through these measures blue collared workers are given a sense of pride and dignity to their job.
The education system in the country has to be revamped to cater to the needs of the industry.This requires constant interaction between educational institutions and industry.Educational exchange programmes has to be promoted by industry so that students get a first hand experience of what is required for the industry.Interested students can groom their career in accordance with this.
